Faculty in Residence

Apply Now for 2026-2027 Residency
The CAT is excited to announce the pilot of a new Faculty in Residence Program, which will allow a WFU faculty member to join the CAT team as a full-time colleague. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. This program is designed to leverage the expertise of WFU teacher-scholars to enrich our work, advance our mission, and expand our impact. It also provides the selected faculty member with dedicated time to focus on teaching and learning, while shaping the program for the benefit of future participants.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The inaugural Faculty in Residence will work closely with Dr. Anita McCauley, the CAT’s Director of Curriculum Development and Assessment, to extend the CAT’s support for department and university initiatives. As a full member of the CAT team, the resident will contribute to all major areas of the CAT’s work, attend staff meetings, support strategic planning, and lead or co-lead programs aligned with their strengths and interests. The resident will also design and implement a project that advances teaching and learning at Wake Forest, culminating in a presentation to internal or external audiences.
Essential Functions
Contributing to programs and services that support individual educators as they develop foundational teaching skills and discover and evaluate new teaching strategies (e.g., consultations, observations, workshops, reading groups, course design institutes, and faculty learning communities).
Contributing to programs and services that support academic units as they build structures, set policies, and allocate resources to advance teaching priorities across the university (e.g., curriculum development; learning assessment; and the assessment of teaching).
Contributing to institutional teaching initiatives aligned with the university’s strategic framework (framework.wfu.edu): inclusive pedagogy, experiential learning, and educating character.
Residency Terms & Benefits
Appointment Dates & Work Arrangements
The residency is considered a full-time appointment (37.5 hours per week) as part of the CAT Team, and will run from May 28, 2026, through May 27, 2027, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The appointment also includes one month of summer vacation, scheduled in coordination with the CAT to ensure adequate time for collaboration and planning, and up to 15 hours of remote work each week.
Compensation & Benefits
This appointment is treated similarly to a temporary administrative role. The Faculty in Residence will receive their regular 9-month salary during the academic year, plus a summer salary of $25,000 to support two additional months of work. The CAT will also provide $2,500 in professional development funding for conference registration, travel, or participation in institutes related to educational and organizational development.
Teaching, Research, & Service Obligations
During the residency, the Faculty in Residence will teach one course each semester. In most cases, the remainder of their teaching load will be bought out by the CAT. In cases where buying out remaining courses would exceed CAT resources, adjustments will be made to the expectations of the residency to account for additional teaching obligations.
While scholarship on teaching and learning and service on teaching-focused committees may be considered part of the regular work of the residency, additional research and service activities fall outside the full-time (37.5-hour) commitment to the CAT and should be reported and discussed. Similarly, although the teaching load is normally limited to one course per semester, any request to teach overload courses must be reviewed in consultation with CAT to ensure the residency remains the faculty member’s primary focus.
Application & Selection Process
Eligibility
The Faculty in Residence program is open to tenured faculty and teaching professionals on full-time, continuing 9-month contracts. Pre-tenure, visiting, adjunct, and faculty librarians are not eligible for this program during the pilot.
